There is a History of Torture and Abuse of the Mentally Ill in American Prisons

There are many examples of the mentally ill getting tortured and abused in prison. In this article I’ll list a few examples and link to a petition, so you can help mentally ill prisoners too.

Darren Rainey

Darren Rainey was a mentally ill man that was tortured to death in a prison by a few jail guards. He had defecated in his prison cell and was told to clean it.

He refused, probably from his mental illness, so they proceeded to remove him from the cell and put him in a shower. It wasn’t just any shower however.

The water had been turned up to scalding temperatures. By the time they retrieved him, his skin was falling off whenever it was touched.

He was heard screaming for help, saying that he couldn’t take it anymore and pleading to be let out of the shower. The prison guards just… laughed at him. They asked him if it was ‘hot enough’ for him. Appalling.

The prison guards that were on duty that day later recieved a promotion and weren’t prosecuted. Disgusting…

Damaris Rodriguez

Recently a lawsuit was filed about a mentally ill woman that was abused, neglected and starved to death in prison. She had the police called because she was responding to hallucinations that were going on in her head.

After her husband dialed 911 to take her to the hospital, the police arrived before the ambulance. This sad fact led to her death. They took her to SCORE, a jail, and proceeded to medically neglect her.

The jail staff assumed she was under the influence when, in fact, she was suffering from psychosis caused by bipolar disorder. She couldn’t eat due to the disease and started to suffer from ketoacidosis.

As a result of the ketoacidosis, she craved large amounts of water. However, instead of giving her much needed medical attention, they moved her to a jail cell without a sink with no access to water.

They proceeded to isolate her and cover her window, so they wouldn’t have to see her. She was vomiting all over the floors and was eventually found dead.

Jamycheal Mitchell

Jamycheal was arrested for stealing about $5 in junk food from a gas station including a mountain dew and candy bar. He was taken to a jail because all the psychiatric beds were full.

He had all his food, clothes and water taken from him as he smeared feces all over the walls. This is sadly a symptom of his mental illness. He was a bipolar schizophrenic like me. This could have been me…

They maced him, seemingly for fun, as they watched him cry. They beat him, naked, for weeks while they refused him medication for his mental illnesses. By the time they were done with him, the 24 year old man was around 90 lbs and looked about 70 years old.

As a result, he died a slow and painful death. This is how America treats it’s mentally ill people.

As We Can See Here… the Mentally Ill are Suffering

This is a reoccurring problem. We need to drastically improve our prison system and treat mentally ill people with some dignity and respect.

How do we sleep at night when these people are suffering and we let it continue? Please sign the petition and end the suffering of our mentally ill prisoners.
