Mentally Ill People Aren’t Lazy

All my life I have heard this phrase; ‘You’re just lazy’. It infuriates me when people say that about mentally ill people. We aren’t lazy. We are living life on extreme difficulty.

When people suffer from various mental illnesses it can cause a variety of symptoms. Depression can cause fatigue and lack of motivation. Schizophrenia can cause hallucinations and delusions. Bipolar disorder can cause mood swings.

People Just Assume Depressed People Are Lazy

However, I often see this happen with unipolar and bipolar depression. Since other people can’t see depression, they just assume it’s laziness or that you shouldn’t be depressed. Ever heard someone say, ‘Why are you depressed? Your life is so good.’? This is so frustrating for depressed people. Anyone can be depressed. There doesn’t have to be a reason for depression and your life doesn’t have to be hard.

The Side Effects of Depression and Other Mental Illnesses

Depression and other mental health problems can cause a whole lot of physical and mental problems that mimic laziness. Here is a list of a few:

  • Fatigue
  • Low self-esteem
  • Hopelessness
  • Low mood
  • Oversleeping
  • Insomnia that causes daytime tiredness
  • Lack of motivation
  • Avolition which is the inability to start or complete assignments or tasks

Another factor to consider is discrimination in the workplace. Mentally ill people are heavily discriminated against in the workplace. It’s hard to even get a job when no one will hire you. Also not all disabled people qualify for disability. So if a mentally ill person doesn’t qualify for disability, it doesn’t mean they aren’t actually mentally disabled.

In Conclusion

As you can see, mentally ill people aren’t lazy and depressed people aren’t lazy. Mental illness is difficult and causes so many problems. Would you tell a cancer patient that they are just lazy? Of course not, so don’t attack mentally ill people like that. Stop telling them to just get a job. We’re trying our hardest and we appreciate support not criticism. It’s hard to be mentally ill and hold down or get a job. Sometimes it’s even impossible, so stop telling us we’re lazy. We work hard to overcome our mental illnesses and survive.
